BIODYNAMICS

What is Biodynamics? It is primarily an agriculture system having its roots in a series of lectures by Austrian Scientist Rudolf Steiner in 1924. His mission was to bridge the gap between the material and spiritual world.

Although modern biodynamics is based on Steiner’s theories there are a number of growers practicing biodynamics who distance themselves from Steiner’s original teachings.  Biodynamics considers the farm to be a living system and also see the farm working in conjunction with the lunar and cosmic rhythms.  The soil is seen as an organism and therefore synthetic fertilizers are considered an anathema to biodynamics.  There are special preparations which are adhered to which enhance the life of the soil.

Here is a list of some biodynamic soil preparations:

* Cow manure fermented in cow horn sprayed on the soil.
* Ground quartz (silica) mixed with rain water, packed in cows horn, buried in the Spring,
dug up in Autumn and sprayed on crops.
* Flower heads of Yarrow fermented in a stag’s bladder, applied to the compost.
* Flower heads of Chamomile fermented in the soil.
* Stinging nettle tea applied to the compost.

These are just a few of the preparations; they may seem strange but the results are usually extraordinary, and there would be no harm in applying these methods to your own flower or vegetable garden.
